Good evening,
For you newbies out there, welcome to Outsider on the Inside. I hope this dispatch from in and around the nation’s capital on underreported topics finds you well.
My YouTube Channel hit 300,000 channel views (whoa!), this new policy brief on portable benefits dropped, and our 2023 Young Voices Regional Leaders Program is in full swing.
If you’re just discovering my musings, here’s a backgrounder and make sure we’re connected on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
2nd Annual VA Elk Hunt Lottery Launches
The Commonwealth of Virginia’s second annual Elk Hunt Lottery just went live and interested applicants have until March 30th, 2023, to enter the lottery.
During the inaugural program last year, $600,000 in conservation funding was generated from the elk hunt. 30,000 entrants applied for a tag. Only five were drawn, while an additional sixth tag was auctioned off during a Virginia Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation banquet.
The cost for residents is $15 and $20 for non-residents. If drawn for a tag, lucky applicants will then have to purchase a special elk hunting license: $40 for Virginia residents and $400 for non-residents.
Per the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), winners will be notified no later than May 30th. Here are some of the bull elk harvested during last October’s hunt:
I’ll be applying soon. May the best man or woman win!
In-N-Out Branches Out East
After many years of speculation, In-N-Out is finally branching out East.
Last month, the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development and the popular California-based burger chain revealed the latter’s plans for its eastward expansion beyond Texas.
$125.5 million will be invested in an Eastern U.S. business office located in the Nashville suburb and will support 277 new jobs by 2026. The announcement also mentioned In-N-Out “plans to open future restaurants in the region, beginning with locations in and around Nashville by 2026.”
Governor Bill Lee (R-TN) lauded the development as follows: “I’m proud to welcome In-N-Out Burger, an iconic American brand, to the Volunteer State. Tennessee’s unmatched business climate, skilled workforce and central location make our state the ideal place for this family-run company to establish its first eastern United States hub. We thank In-N-Out for planting roots in Williamson County and creating new jobs for Tennesseans.”
Fingers crossed this expansion means franchises opening in Virginia. This California girl would be pleased.
