After some consternation and rescheduling, I finally made the trek up to Pennsylvania to target steelhead trout. I was able to sneak there this weekend (heeding all pre-cautions).
I booked a prime steelhead property with Outdoor Access with access to the infamous Elk Creek and am so glad I did.
I kid you not: this place was full of steelhead trout. Across two deep limestone creek pools, our group spotted 100 or so steelhead. And large ones at that. I've never seen anything like this before.
This wasn't the first time I've targeted steelhead. I've had success down in northern Georgia fishing with Headwaters on the Soque. But there's something a bit different with these northern fish. Their girth is incredible and their fighting skills are mighty. I lost many fish on the fly, but mustered enough power to successfully catch two fish altogether: one on an artificial minnow, the other on my friend Brad's fly rod.
Pennsylvania's Fish and Boat Commission's steelhead program is one of the best in the nation. At least a million of these incredible fish are stocked in lakes, rivers, and streams early. How cool is that?
If you haven't been here yet, add it to your wish-list. You'll thank me later.
I’ll be posting a vlog on the experience in the coming days. Subscribe to my YouTube Channel to watch it when it drops.
