Good afternoon!
Welcome to Outsider on the Inside. I hope this dispatch from in and around the nation’s capital on underreported topics finds you well.
If you’re just discovering my musings, here’s a backgrounder.
Here’s what I have for you today:
Cheers to Five Years of Freelancing
It only gets better in your freelancing journey… I went public with my business FIVE years ago yesterday using the above photo. 🎉 🥳
Has the journey to self-employment been easy? Far from it. I had to start from scratch all over again. I toiled with periods of roller coaster income, uncertainty, and ghosting from prospective clients. There were times I thought I had to return to the 9-to-5.
As business started to grow and become more consistent, I picked up more skills and went to industry trade shows. My confidence grew. I was making progress and raking in neat opportunities. I started getting quality, higher dollar clients AND garnered loads of media hits for those I worked with. I also built my personal brand writing and offering commentary. I returned to Townhall.com as a columnist, raked up some big interviews, and scored an award and landed on Professional Outdoor Media Association Board of Directors.
I realized I could excel at media consulting AND freelance writing / journalism. I built trust and started to get more serious leads.
Now I’m in the position to say NO to work. That’s a gratifying feeling. You won’t become a millionaire overnight but you could be on track to be your happiest, healthiest, and prosperous IF you hustle.
Freelancing is becoming more popular. More than 59M Americans, or 36% of the workforce, engages in flexible work. And that number will continue to grow.
Thanks for following along. And to my clients, past and current: THANK YOU! You’ve made me a better person and I’m honored to have played a role in your business journey too. ❤️
