Good evening,
For you newbies out there, welcome to Outsider on the Inside. I hope this dispatch from in and around the nation’s capital on underreported topics finds you well.
If you’re just discovering my musings, here’s a backgrounder and make sure we’re connected on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
A Great Stop 30-by-30 Summit
I’ve just returned from the 2nd annual Stop 30-by-30 Summit in Dallas, Texas. It was a scorcher in every sense - from the humidity to presentations.
As I mentioned in the last issue, I was asked to moderate a public lands panel. I’m pleased to report it went well, even with a last-minute change.
Congressman Tom Tiffany (R-WI), who are originally scheduled to speak, was unable to make it due to scheduled votes back on Capitol Hill. In his place was our keynote speaker, Aurelia Skipwith Giacometto - former Trump administration U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Aurelia joined me and Benjamin Burr, executor director of the Blue Ribbon Coalition and former staffer to Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), on the panel. From the initial feedback I’ve received, the change-up enhanced the conversation.
Here are more photos from the event.
Post-conference, our group ventured out to Fort Worth to check out the Stockyards. I hadn’t been to this Texas town before, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
We ate dinner at Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que. I was privy to the jalapeno sausage and brisket.
Then our large group galavanted around the Stockyards, which comprises the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District.
According to the official website, the first European settlers dubbed it “Cowtown” since millions of cattle were transported through here annually.
Today, the Stockyards hosts a twice-daily cattle drive at 11am CT and 4:30pm CT (weather dependent, of course). I just missed the Saturday afternoon show but got a glimpse of some longhorn during my visit.
I passed by Mule Alley, a unique area within the Stockyards, that glistened and was bustling with people. It is home to the Hotel Drover, a boutique hotel, and countless shops and restaurants.
I had to get a photo under the Forth Worth sign, of course.
We topped off the night at White Elephant Saloon. The bar scene really isn’t my thing, but this was my kind of place. Much better than a DC-area dive bar. From the website:
Located in Fort Worth’s dangerous Hells Half Acre since the 1890’s, the White Elephant after years of dormancy moved to the Historic Stockyards in the 1970’s and has been one of Fort Worth’s premiere tourist attractions ever since.
Known in Wild West lore as host to Fort Worth’s last gunfight featuring Fort Worth Sheriff Longhair Jim Courtright against White Elephant owner Luke Short, the White Elephant Saloon is to this day still haunted by the memory & presence of Longhair Jim, one of Fort Worth’s most corrupt lawmen.
Thanks, DFW!
I’m Testifying Before the Kansas State Legislature Wednesday
On Wednesday I'll speak before the 2023 Special Committee on Foreign Adversary Investments and Land Purchases: Presentation on Property Rights on behalf of the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT).
This will be the first testimony I'll be delivering before any lawmaking body. Very exciting!
I'd appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes. 😊
