Good evening,
For you newbies out there, welcome to Outsider on the Inside. I hope this dispatch from in and around the nation’s capital on underreported topics finds you well.
If you’re just discovering my musings, here’s a backgrounder and make sure we’re connected on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
500 Subscribers
This scrappy little newsletter of mine recently hit the 500 subscriber milestone. (I also hit 20,000 followers on my public Facebook page too.) While it might not sound notable, I’m rejoicing.
Why? First, newsletters are the most difficult medium to grow. And two, it’s perfectly acceptable to celebrate little victories. Don’t mind me.
If you enjoy the content here, please encourage your friends to check this space out. When I hit 1,000 subs, I’ll start offering occasional Subscriber Only content. Be on the lookout for that when I do.
Chicago, Chicago - That Toddling Town
As some of you saw on social media, I spent the last week in Chicago, Illinois, at the 31st annual State Policy Network Annual Meeting. The Windy City has certainly seen better days. Though it’s still got charm, delicious food, and impressive architecture.
I first began this trip at Eataly for lunch and Chicago Chop House for a work dinner.
I also admired some Chicago architecture like the John Hancock Building and some famous riverwalk high rises.
And, of course, sights and sounds from SPN itself with my Young Voices colleagues and friends. (I didn’t take many pictures but saw and met a lot of people!) I even explored the Metaverse during a conference happy hour.
All in all, a great trip. Chicago rounds out my busiest stretch of travel for the year. I only have three conferences left and a nearly two month break beginning later this month.
Soon, I’m heading on an actual vacation that I’ll try to be offline for. And I’ll be releasing Alaska video blogs on YouTube next week and after my trip.
Stay tuned, and thanks for reading!

Fox News quoted me in another piece about Commerce Department rules concerning recreational fishing and boating.
I appeared on The Bespoke Podcast to discuss the Education Department defunding school archery and hunting programs.
And I appeared on WMAL News to chat about offshore wind exploration displacing and harming whales—including endangered Norther Atlantic right whales.
